In 71 AD, Never have the dead had more cause for vengeance and the living for fear.
The former legate Marcus Antonius Primus is forced to flee after his plot to murder Emperor Vespasian is discovered. But the Emperor’s soldiers are in pursuit and the gods are not in his favour. He is tracked to Burdigala, burned alive and left for dead on the banks of the Garonne River … or so they think.
Primus’ miraculous survival could only have been conferred to him by Nemesis herself, as the only thing keeping his unrecognizable, skeletal shell alive – his flesh melted away, his mind addled by the milk of the poppy – is revenge … not only on Pontus Gnaeus, Apex Lucius and all those who foiled his assassination attempt, but on their wives, lovers and everyone they hold dear. Like a lost soul, wandering between two worlds after an imperfect funeral, drinking from the chalice of the goddess, Primus will not stop until his bloody vengeance is complete.
